WISSEMBOURG
At the very heart of nature and history

lauterWissembourg is not only the "Gateway" to France but is also one of the gateways to the Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord. (Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park). Set in the foothills of the Vosges, the town's situation is ideal for the tourist who wants to discover the treasures of the Alsatian countryside.

Formerly a small town of craftsmen and winegrowers, Wissembourg has always been a welcoming place, not only rich in memories, but also pleasant to stroll around. The districts near the Abbey Church of Sts Pierre et Paul which dominates the roofs of the old town, encourage you to walk around and discover a truly remarkable architectural heritage such as the Hôtel de Ville, the Temple St. Jean, the "Maison du Sel" (Salt House), the Musée Westercamp (Westercamp Museum), la "Maison de l'Ami Fritz" (Ami-Fritz's House) as well as the "Dominicain" (Dominican) with its "Relais Culturel Régional" (Regional Cultural Centre). Numerous parks and leafy areas, including the Ramparts, add a welcome touch of green.

Discover the town individually or follow the tourist itinerary available at the Tourist Offfice or join a group for a guided tour. Guided tours are organised throughout the year.

Nestling in a green setting, Wissembourg invites you to discover a rich historical past which is constantly being enhanced. For example, signposted pedestrian walkways have been created over the last few years, among others the "Lignes de la Lauter" (Lines of the Lauter – a defence line dating from 1706) as well as a cross-border cycle path. There are theme outings in the Old Town which evoke Medieval or Renaissance periods. On foot, by bicycle, by car or by plane, numerous circuits allow you to discover the wealth of the region, its picturesque villages, the wine road, fortified castles and the forts and bunkers of the Maginot Line.

A lively town and the seat of traditions, its picturesque streets provide the setting for a myriad of events and activities during the summer season among which, to name but two, are the Whitsun Festival in May and the International Music Festival at the beginning of September.
